Credit Report Errors – How To Fix Them Right Away
Some studies have shown that approximately 80% of all Americans have errors of some kind contained within their credit record. Also, these same studies have shown that roughly 1 in 4 have serious error contained within their credit profile. With credit having such a high level of importance in this day and age, these numbers are astronomical. With a population of over 310 million people in the United States, this would mean that almost 250 million Americans have errors within their credit record.
The question you’re facing if you should be in such a situation is – what should you do to correct the error/s in your credit record? Will it be easy to fix the error/s? How much time will it take to fix them? What are the consequences of these errors on the person? It is for this reason that this article has been written – to answer such questions that you may ask.
All Americans should have a credit record check-up once, or better yet, twice a year. Whether there are errors or none in your credit report, you can readily verify this when you have it checked. It is always best to try and correct these errors as early as possible because it can be a very frustrating and time consuming process. You would not want to have to go through this when you are trying to buy a home, purchase an automobile, or trying to taking out a personal loan. Don’t underestimate the harm that errors in your credit report can do to you; they can be the only reason you can be denied for credit!
Treat the errors immediately by disputing them with the respective credit bureau. Remember that different errors may appear in all credit bureaus. Any discrepancies in the report have to be disputed with the credit bureau that reports the error/s. This error should also be reported and disputed with the creditor/lender who owns the account too. An immediate action will insure that the error is duly corrected and the record is cleared.
Generally speaking, correcting an error is an easy process. There are times, however, that it may not be so. Getting these problems fixed will generally take about 30-60 days to get taken care of. It could sometimes take a longer time. Pray that you don’t become a victim of identity theft; it is one problem that is very hard and long to resolve.
Once the situation is fixed, request a letter from the creditor and the credit bureau testifying that the issue is caused by an error and that it has been duly straightened out. Such letter is your precaution for any future transactions wherein you may be questioned. You are not ‘safe’ even if your situation has been fixed. It is common that resolved credit problems resurface later, so don’t presume they won’t. It would be nice if the creditors and credit bureaus would be placed under stricter rules and regulations to insure the accuracy of a person’s credit rating. This is due to the fact that, now more than ever, a person’s credit rating is a big factor in many transactions. Further, the regulations in the credit industry should be strictly enforced after having been improved. This would most likely help to lessen the number of reporting errors.
