One of the most notorious and sought after cars in the world, Ferrari boasts its complex yet wonderful quality and dashing style. With its definite dominance in speed and maneuverability, it is safe to say that Ferrari is the greatest car developer and manufacturer in the whole world.

The man who founded Ferrari was named Enzo Ferrari. He started the Scuderia Ferrari, the first ever name of Ferrari, in Modena, Italy in 1929 as an amateur driver sponsorship. With this Sponsorship, he helped train and developed drivers to race on an Alfa Romeo model sports car. He continued to run the sponsorship until he was hired by Alfa Romeo in 1938 to head the motor racing division.

Enzo Ferrari excelled in managing the division in Alfa Romeo and developed new technologies in manufacturing cars. In the 1940′s the Fascist government of Benito Mussolini took over Italy. This brought the Alfa Romeo into the hands of the Italian government in order to further support the Axis powers. It was never the matter for Enzo since his division was small and was not affected by the change of control.

The Tipo 815 was first actual Ferrari car ever made and debuted in 1940 at the Mille Miglia. However, it saw little competition because of the Second World War. The Ferrari Factory was then moved to Marenello, Italy in 1943. Unfortunately, due to the spoils of the Second World War, the factory was bombed during a raid in 1944 leaving the factory in ruins. With full determination, Enzo sought to rebuild the damaged factory. In 1946, right after the war has ceased, he did just that by rebuilding the factory and included in his repertoire a works-for-road car production. No one even expected that from then on, Ferrari would become so popular.

The Tipo 815 was the first ever Ferrari racecar to debut amongst the public. It was shown to the public at the Mille Miglia in 1940 and saw very little competition. However, Enzo Ferrari was reluctant in introducing to the public his automobiles. He was not pleased by the fact that people are buying his cars not for the performance, but only, for the prestige.

Whoever thought that a racecar driver and his little division from Alfa Romeo could ever be the greatest automobile manufacturer of all time. From a racecar driver, Enzo Ferrari became the reluctant manufacturer and seller of the world’s premier sports car company.

Mark Anthony Cella and His Favorite 60′s era Ferrari 250 SWB Berlinetta

Building on the successful history of the V12 GT racing engines that made the GTOs so substantial, brought the 250 Berlinetta sport coupe about. GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato in Italian, and in English means Grand Touring Homologated. Homologated means Official Agreement. So, the GTO was Officially Agreed to be a Grand Touring car. Anyway, the 250 simply is the measurement in cubic centimeters of each of the cylinders.

The SWB was built from 1953 to 1964 and really put Ferrari in the limelight. It became Ferrari’s most successful car line of that time. It was their first all wheel disc brake vehicle. One model was their first four seater. Its V12 engine weighed about half as much as the competition’s. The higher tuned ones hammered up to 280bhp at 7,000 rpm. They had a four speed manual tranny, all of which exploded the car to more victories then I can list, here’s just a few:

1960 Le Mans 24 hr race, it took 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, while Chevy and Aston Martin were far behind. It won three repeat 5500 km Tour de Frances, while taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 1960 event. That season driver Sterling Moss lapped the entire field at Goodwood to take the second consecutive win. SWB won all over in England, Monza Italy, Spa, Nurbrgring, and Monthlery.

The car weighs only 2,314 pounds which equates to a very high power to weight ratio. Its top speed reached 152 and it hit 60 from a dead stop in 6.2 seconds. All of these figures were superb in 1960.

It is said that owners of this car had the luxury and thrill of being able to drive it to the race track, unload their luggage and be ready to race with minimal or no modifications.
