Growing Asters – Transplanting Tips

In looking for seeds to plant which would give at maturity something different and distinctive for winter arrangements, I found three rather odd beans whose ripened pods could be used in many charming ways. These were the frost-proof English bean, flava, called by many other names. The Chinese salad bean, which I believe to be a soy, and the Spanish Chestnut bean which seems more like a pea to me. These are all edible if you like them, which my family do not; but to me are more adaptable as decorative material.

I found the English bean growing in a friend’s garden. She said the seed had been given her by an Englishman who grew them for his own use. They looked very odd to me; it was in the fall of the year and the small bushes were full of the black upright pods with several of the matured beans in them. These pods grew in clusters and seemed very durable. She allowed me to pick all I wanted of them, and of course I availed myself of the opportunity. The seeds were irregular, rather large and of a light buff color. They were planted early the following spring, two or three in a hill about a foot apart. The flowers were decorative in themselves, pea-shaped, black and white. The green pods contain beans which when cooked have the combined flavor of both bean and pea. The people of Europe seem to enjoy these beans more than we do and recognized them on sight. I have since bought what are labled the flava bean, but it was not the same as mine. The ripened pods may be left on the stalk for flower arrangements or used in clusters in charm strings

Many have used the Chinese salad bean to provide bean sprouts in Chinese cookery, but I noticed their possibilities when I saw the clusters of ripened beans, black and like thin fingers springing out from a central point. The tiny peas or beans do not take up much garden space and are very prolific – much like my African violets are under fluorescent grow lights.

I happened to run across an advertisement featuring the Chestnut bean. it has a Spanish name and it is said to oe grown there and liked for its flavor. So I got some seed and settled back to watch it grow. it is always a thrill for me to grow something new from seed, surprises a.e usually in store. The plant looked more like the wild prairie peas I am familiar with. The blossom was white and somewhat sparse. It is never a heavy bearer in my garden, also not as quick to germinate as some beans. It might be beneficial to give them a previous soaking. The fruit is an inflated pod, containing a bean or two, quite a good size, rather fuzzy, bright green. When ripe the pod is a buff color and sprays of these look well with any of the black podded beans or Baptisia pods, which are also inflated. I usually plant these beans and the Chinese beans when the garden beans are planted, but the English beans may be planted early when the first peas go in.

While I cannot recommend any of these beans as food, they do give a new and different note to prize-winning bouquets in garden shows or fairs.

Varieties Of Spring Shrubs

These words will be read at about the beginning of the fall planting season, and so it may be well to consider some improvements in the spring garden which can be made by the planting of well chosen shrubs in the fall.

At the outset, however, I must emphasize that only shrubs which have matured and are really fit for moving should be planted or moved at this time, because all the advantages of fall planting may be lost if the growth of shrubs or rose plants has not matured and reached the beginning of its dormant period.

I grew up in an atmosphere of Spiraea vanhouttei and what were called “snowballs,” which preceded the mock-oranges and the weigelas. Then we came to have Hydrangea paniculata grandiflora, which we now call “Peegee.” This particular shrub, from Japan, was violently advertised and came close to covering the entire country with its summer blooms which were actually praised because they never ended but hung on in a dirty, dull pink – if you could call it pink – over the winter. Myself I like the look of a full flowered bougainvillea to dress the patio.

Incidentally, it was all of 20 years before I discovered that H. paniculata – not Peegeewas a grand and different shrub which could be relied upon to do a beautiful late summer job without any winter imposition. And I am sorry that this is not more widely grown, because it is vigorous enough and much more beautiful than the overdone Peegee ever was.

For a long time the planting about my summer home at Eagles Mere was dominated by a man who really knew only three plants, which he called hydrangea, lilac and fern. As time went on it seemed advisable to look for other spring flowering material, and for aid in that direction I turned to some real plant lovers among the nurserymen, who responded with many other items.

Seeking assistance on bougainvillea is just one of our strong points. Click on the link to visit http://www.plant-care.com/bougainvillea-plant-care-blooming.html. Also published at Varieties Of Spring Shrubs.

Some Facts On Poison Ivy

Almost everyone is familiar with poison ivy. This seemingly harmless plant is found all over the world. Contact with it can elicit mild to severe reactions that will vary from person to person. This is a huge problem with individuals who love to spend time outdoors. It is worth your time to become familiar with the basics of this plant.

Poison ivy is one member of a species of plant called Sumach. This plant is poisonous and is most commonly known for the symptoms induced by a liquid found in the plant called urushiol. This clear liquid is the cause of the majority of symptoms people experience. The substance is easily transferred to the skin through physical contact with the plant.

You will find this pest all over North America, Asia, and Europe. It takes on multiple appearances and often resembles other plants, making is especially difficult to identify and avoid. It can be found as a trailing vine, a small bush approximately 2 foot high, or as a climbing vine that will grow up trees or other vertical structures.

The symptoms of this plant are very common, with most people experiencing them from time to time. Some individuals are immune to the plant and experience no reactions at all. This process usually begins with red, inflamed skin that soon becomes itchy. In time, obvious blisters will form. Some people experience a fever. Less common symptoms include dizziness, the swelling of the throat, and difficulty breathing.

As one of the most common allergies in the world, it is very difficult to prevent poison ivy. Perhaps the most obvious, and most effective, method of prevention lies in simply avoiding it all together. Familiarize yourself with pictures of the plant to help you identify and avoid it. If exposure cannot be prevented, remove and wash all clothes that have come in contact with the plant, and wash the body to help prevent a reaction.

The symptoms will recede in time, often needing no treatment at all. Usually, however, people seek relief from the itching. This can be accomplished through wet compresses or by soaking the area in cool water. Many keep lotions and antihistamine pills on hand. Remember that it’s important that you try not to scratch and irritate the blisters.

Poison ivy is an extremely common problem over much of the globe. This is especially true for anyone who spends considerable amounts of time near wooded areas. Luckily, this ailment is very easily treated and can generally be done in the comfort of the home, provided there are no severe allergic reactions.

100 % Free Device Shed Blueprints – Just Utilize The Finest

When you tackle any woodworking job, it does not need to be said that a group of plans for the precise job you are about to try will be a massive help, and get your project off to a dream start. The fact is that tool shed blueprints alter a lot in precision. Some plans are awfully tough to translate at all, and end being worthless because you can’t understand them.

I remember seeing a set of free tool shed blueprints that my buddy had, and I couldn’t make out from them what I was meant to do, or what went where. The layout was so tiny and hard to read. The diagrams were a mess and there was no materials list or cut sheet. These are just the things I was attempting to find before I would start the project. I wanted everything laid out for me.

When trying to work from a group of free tool shed plans, bear in mind that they’re unlikely to meet the local building laws for your special construction. At best they’ll give you concepts which you can take and develop further for yourself. But you will need to do some work in finding out where the shortcomings are in the free plans. That suggests getting a professional to have a look at them for you.

For my plans, I wanted to know the sort of wood I deserve to be using, and details of the cut sizes. I was aware of the budget I wanted to work, and the time I would need to give up so as to complete the job. It’s a brilliant idea to cost the job before you start as you might end up spending dollars pointlessly.

Not that I do not mind spending dollars when it is justified, but I do not like wasting it either, particularly when I learn afterward that I could have saved dollars by doing the job differently. No one wants to hear that reports. My recommendation is to get the best set of plans for your tool shed before you start, and then you will have a better chance of finishing the job on time and within your budget.

Whether you’re an expert carpenter or a beginner, this site here building your own shed will give you detailed info on gambrel shed plans

A Colorful Garden From A Creative Gardener

Pelleted seeds with the coating tinted the same color as the blooms they produce is the latest addition to the expanding garden field. Now the guesswork can be eliminated from color grouping at planting time.

Ordinarily, seeds are coated or pelleted with chemical substances to encourage faster growth, larger blooms and to serve as guards against diseases and insects. Also, they are extra large, which makes them easier to plant and space, doing away with the laborious job of thinning later in the season. This new colored coating provides everything plain coating does, plus the fun of choosing the color of the blooms you wish before putting the seeds in the ground. Now the gardener can truly become the master of color in his garden.

At the present time home gardeners can get sweet pea, zinnia and petunia seeds in Kolorcoat, which is a good start for painting with flowers in the garden.

Not long ago the manufacturer invited home gardeners to test and comment on these seeds. One woman drew a parallel between colored seeds and flower arrangement. “One is done in the soil and the other in the living room.” She felt that planting seeds according to color called for the same amount of artistic skill as arranging the blooms.

The home gardener, like the amateur painter, goes through stages of experimenting with color combinations, harmonies, design and pattern. So, an imaginative business man, who is also a home gardener, took the idea of coloring seeds, experimented with it and has now presented it to all home gardeners to use and enjoy.

So what are you waiting for, read some articles regarding the idea of coloring seeds and enjoy you garden. With our help we can surely help you about plants and garden.

The Roles Of Soil Types And Gardens Plays

Pruning is an important operation in blueberry culture. It must be done in winter or early spring, before growth starts. The first two years after planting, the bushes will need little pruning other than removing weak branches. Bearing bushes, however, should he pruned to produce large berries. To prune correctly, the gardener should know the bearing habits of the plant. During the summer, blueberries form fruit buds – large plump buds at the end of the shoots. These remain dormant throughout the winter, then bloom and produce fruit the next summer. The pruning of different varieties varies with the characteristic growth of the plant. Some varieties sprout freely from the base; others tend to grow to one stem. Where the plants sprout from the base, some of the older canes must be removed.

Rules for Pruning

The rules for pruning are quite simple: Remove or cut back a few of the older stems, since these tend to produce weak shoots with small berries. Remove all branches that are so near the ground that the fruit might become soiled. Thin out the top, removing the short weak shoots. Cut back shoots with too many fruit buds.

In growing blueberries yellowing of the leaves is not uncommon. This results from a lack of iron and develops when the soil is too alkaline. To remedy the situation, add a fertilizer such as sulphate of ammonia, which will leave an acid residue. This should be used with care on young bushes; an overdose may be harmful. Acid organic mulches such as peatmoss will also help.

Insects which may attack a blueberry planting include blueberry fruit fly or blueberry maggot, cranberry fruit worm, blueberry stem borer, red-striped fire-worm, white grubs. gypsy moth caterpillars, red-humped caterpillars and the cranberry spittle insect. All of these can be controlled easily.

Among the diseases, mummy berry and blueberry stunt disease are the most serious. Mummy berry is caused by a fungus which rots and mummifies partly ripe fruit. Spraying is not effective in controlling this disease; to keep it in check, rake the mummified berries from the ground and destroy them. Blueberry stunt is a virus disease; infected bushes should be pulled up and burned. The modern varieties in cultivation today are a far cry from the original species, producing larger and sweeter berries.
