Why You Really Are Never Too Old To Learn To Play The Piano

You may be thinking that piano teachers only tell you that you are never too old to learn to play the piano because they want your money. Think again. Experienced teachers tell you that because they know that it is true for nearly everyone. As long as you are motivated, it is possible to learn piano. Expert teachers know the reasons, and you should too.

The big problem with placing age limits on learning is that the limits are not the same for everyone. In the past, classical piano training required students to start at 5 years old. If a student could not keep up with the traditional regimen of finger exercises or was unable to read the notes well, they might have been called less than talented. In the general public, it was often thought that only the gifted were destined to be musical.

Potential private piano students are those who are learning to read and write or who already have those skills. Why? Because music is simply another language. Learning to read and write it is a very similar process to acquiring a new language. Older students can often apply their language learning skills to learning music. This widens the acceptable starting ages for pianists to as young as 2 or 3 to as old as 11 to 75. The point is that you can start at almost any age.

Experienced teachers will actually plan a piano learning program that is tailored to the age and maturity of the student. There are many, many well written course books that are available now. You do not need to begin at 5, nor is it a problem if life made you wait until 75. Find a good teacher that has taught many ages and used many course books, and you have a great chance to succeed regardless of your age.

For older grade students and adults, finding time to practice is one of the biggest challenges. School and work obligations frequently take up much of the weekly schedule, making it difficult to keep up with lesson assignments. But motivation to acquire piano technique and play piano pieces can help learners to work around schedule problems.

Helping an older student learn can be as easy as modeling good time management habits. Setting up an area to store piano music, theory workbooks, manuscript paper, pencils and erasers, and a lesson assignment notebook are the first step. Make sure your piano has good light so eyes do not become strained. Try different practice times over the course of one week, and choose what works best for everyone in the family. Stick to the routine until it becomes normal.

Scheduling practice time is essential. Many older students actually block out regular times in their appointment calendars to make certain that nothing else interferes. Develop a routine that works and stick to it.

When your teenager, or high school kid tells you they would like to try piano, let them. They are never too old to learn to play if they are interested. Do not discourage older adults either. They get the same joy from learning as anyone else. Once their decision to try has been announced, be supportive. Applaud any progress, and enjoy their success. Piano music brings happiness, and age should not be a barrier to it.

5 Tips Of Frugal Living In A Big City

The idea of metropolitan frugality has not been one discussed very often by my generation. Saving money is now cool again, and there is not better time to change your spending and saving habits. These tips can help guide you if you live in an expensive metropolitan area, like I do in Seattle, WA.

Credit is limited or not available, gas prices continue to soar, and people are working longer and harder for less.

Living in a large city like Seattle, rents are high, home prices are higher, and it just seems like everything is more expensive. This didn’t matter too much to many people a few short years ago, but few can argue they haven’t attempted to tighten their belts.

Previous to any economic crash, my family and I chose to live simpler, and here are 5 tips that we have followed. Not only have these choices saved us money, but have also given us a freedom we had yet to experience.

#1. Live close to where you work – Acting on a gut feeling in early 2006, my family sold our home which was a 20 commute from work, and moved into a home that is 3 blocks away from my work, and her work.

Obviously this gives us more time, and as everyone knows, time is money. This time was not only created in our commute time to work, but also to the grocery store, to schools, to parks, and some of our favorite restaurants. This move gave us the ability to sell our most expensive, quickly decreasing asset. Our second car. Not only has it rid us of the maintenance and upkeep, but has given our budget some breathing room, slashing our $400.00 gasoline budget to $50.00.

#2. Just say no to debt – Get out of debt at all costs. Utilizing some free tips from daveramsey.com, we created the debt snowball necessary to quit paying interest to creditors. We can not start to live like no one else, so we can live like no one else.

Following our move in 2006, I lucked into his website, and followed his 7 baby steps which are free of charge and well explained. The tougher part was deciding we wanted to not owe anyone any money. Credit card debt, student loans, and a HELOC were our biggest ball and chains. The snowball allowed us to target our smallest debt, and quickly make some headway to being debt free.

18 months later, we have a small amount of our HELOC left, and have fully subscribed to the no borrowing way of life. If you don’t have the cash, you do not buy it. This can be followed even further, if you have the cash, you may not want to buy it either.

#3. Renting out any extra space in your house – This might not apply to everyone, since you might rent, or your house might be a little tight to be renting to anyone. Luckily for us we had some extra space. In the new home we moved into we instantly rented out our finished basement with a kitchen as a non conforming mother in law apartment. This allowed us to make headway on our debt, and now that the debt is gone, we just have extra income.

This allowed us to pay for my wife’s masters degree, with cash.

I must admit, it did take some getting used to, but every month we know it was worth it. Other options that can be available if you do not have a separate area to rent, are renting out a room to a college student, or for a nanny/au pere to save on child care.

#4. Clip those coupons – As Granny as this may sound, I think clipping coupons are one of the best ways to pay less for everyday items. Once you become efficient at it, and realize the commonly bought items, this can cut as much as 90% from your bill.

The only problem I noticed was that much that is available via coupons seems like junk food that I would never normally buy. However, using a site like TheFrugalGirl.com and MoneySavingMom.com are great resources for excellent coupons on expensive cleaning products and bathroom accessories.

One of the tips I recently read that was unrelated to coupons, but can save hundreds of dollars a year is to buy rags. Yes rags. For $15.00 you can buy 100 rags, and using them instead of paper towels can seriously cut a grocery budget. By washing the rags with regular laundry it doesn’t use more water, and cuts down on your overall consumption.

#5. Build a free standing garden – You may even have the space to have a garden, but many people living in a city do not. Using pots or boxes to plant vegetables can be a huge money saver, and better for your health.

If you have extra you can even share with your neighbors. We have done this with zucchini, tomatoes, squash, peas, and strawberries.

It saves us a ton of money, and we know where our food comes from.

We recently did a streamlined budget based on Dave Ramsey’s advice, and also looked if we would be better off moving to where property, food, and taxes would be cheaper.

With the changes we have made, it actually didn’t make any sense to do this. We have everything we need, right in the city, and just by cutting a few basics, depending on ourselves, and getting rid of pesky debt, living in the city has actually become affordable.
